Jon Shines on first ever rally!

(March 07, 2012)

Young Fermanagh Teenager Jon Armstrong completed in his first stage rally last week in the Fivemiletown Spring Rally 2012, where his good steady pace seen him pick up success on his first proper stage rally!

The weekend was not all plain sailing by any means though, Jon had only returned home from a school trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France at 1:30am the night before the rally and then had to get up and ready for action at 6:30am. Not only that, the 17 year old also had to build a relationship very quickly with new co-driver Emmet Sherry who he had not meet in person before the rally and learnt how to use pace notes for the first time. Not what Jon wanted but nether a less Jon started the event in great spirit which is likely why he managed to break away from the rest of his class and have a lead of well over a minute in his class and was even placed 15th overall at the half way point. At the mid-way service Jon said: " All has really went very good so far, we have kept safe but fast over the morning loop and are very happy with how it went, the pace notes are spot on and I am getting use to them now".

Jon continued at the same pace on the second loop around the events 4 stages which were run twice each, he had not received any results from the event until the end of ss7 Crocknagrally 2. Once reality hit home at how good he was really doing Jon decided to just pull back slightly over the last stage and get to the finish and he did just that coming home in style. Jon said at the finish "Woohoo! What a fantastic day, it’s amazing because we were only coming here today to get to the finish and learn the pace notes but to get this result is outstanding. We have won our class and finished 4th two-wheel drive, 13th overall which is past any of our expectations! I have to really thank Emmet for doing such a great job on the pace notes, am sure it wasn't easy and for my team, Dad, Neil and Rea, the main mechanics running the car perfectly!"
